Our LATIN AND GREEK classes
Institutum Antiquitatis offers a rigorous academic pathway for the mastery of Classical Latin and Ancient Greek. Our methodology is centered on the Active Method, where students engage with languages as living vehicles of thought. All instruction is designed to bridge the gap between foundational grammar and the profound interrogation of primary classical texts.
What level is right for me?
-
This level is designed for students with little to no previous exposure to the classical languages, as well as those who wish to solidify their foundational knowledge through the Active Method.
Students will acquire the core morphology of the language, including the complete declension system, the basic indicative and passive verb paradigms, and essential narrative syntax.
The goal is to move from foundational recognition to the ability to narrate and understand structured classical myths and simple prose.
-
Designed for students who possess a functional command of basic morphology and are ready to navigate more sophisticated syntactical structures and transitional texts.
For Latin, this level corresponds to the conclusion of Familia Romana and the beginning of Roma Aeterna. Focus is placed on the mastery of the subjunctive mood, complex conditional sentences, and the transition to unadapted prose and poetic meter.
The goal is to bridge the gap between instructional textbooks and the direct reading of classical authors, focusing on stylistic nuance and increased reading fluency.
-
This level is reserved for students who have achieved a high degree of proficiency and seek to engage in a rigorous philological interrogation of primary classical sources. For Latin, this stage corresponds to the advanced study of Roma Aeterna and our Specialized Author Seminars on Ovid, Livy, and Cicero; in Ancient Greek, it is designed for those who have completed the Athenaze sequence and are ready to interrogate unadapted Attic prose and Epic poetry, including the works of Homer, Plato, and Thucydides. Participants will analyze advanced rhetoric, intertextuality, and the historical development of the languages. The goal is to achieve absolute autonomy in the target language, enabling students to conduct high-level academic dialectic and sophisticated textual analysis entirely in Latin or Ancient Greek.

immersion trips
Meet the authors and the stories you love right where events unfolded.
Programs in Development. Institutum Antiquitatis is currently designing intensive immersion programs to be held at historical sites across the Mediterranean. These trips will offer a unique opportunity to study classical authors in the locations where their narratives unfolded. Instruction will be conducted entirely in the target language, combining site visits with rigorous daily seminars.
